For me, setting a table is never just about plates and glasses. It’s about sharing my love through the details. It is about creating an environment that feels calm, welcoming, and deeply connected. I want each guest to feel cared for the moment they sit down, surrounded by textures, colors, and light that invite ease and conversation. Each tablescape begins long before a single fork is placed; it starts with a spark of inspiration.
Gathering Inspiration
Whenever I set out to create a tablescape, it always look for inspiration. I’ll scroll through photos, flip through books, or take a walk outside waiting for something to spark my imagination. Perhaps its a cozy living room with layered textures, a moody painting, a beautiful outfit, or even the colors in nature. I love collecting images that make me pause. If I see a room I adore, I’ll notice why I love it. Maybe it’s the warmth of the wood, the softness of the lighting, or the mix of patterns that feels both relaxed and elegant. Then I take those elements and translate them into a tablescape.
For this particular tablescape, I started by gathering a handful of images that spoke to me. There’s a moody mudroom with a contrasting pinstripe wallpaper, it feels both elegant and effortless , and I love that moody vibe. Another is a painting filled with muted tones of burgundy and maroon; the brushstrokes remind me of how color can feel alive yet soothing. I’ve also tucked in some other photos of fruit the capture the mood. And finally, there’s a snapshot from a bedroom that is similar to the mudroom yet adds in the dimension of velvet and linen.
Each of these images holds a feeling I want to bring into the table: grace, balance, warmth, and a touch of nature. From here, I start imagining how those same emotions can live in fabric, flowers, and light. Now I can translate what I see into a beautiful tablescape

Building the Layers
Once I have the mood board, I start visualizing how to layer these textures and colors. For me, this part is the heart of the process since it’s where the table comes alive. I make sure mix textures so that the table feels dynamic: soft linen with smooth ceramics, a glimmer of glass beside something organic like wood or rattan.
Most importantly, I play with height. Varying heights of candles, flowers, serving pieces, all help in creating a little rhythm that guides the eye across the table. I think about balance constantly: if one area feels heavy, I lighten it; if a color feels too bold, I echo it somewhere else softly.
I chose a soft pinstriped crinkled linen tablecloth that reminds me of the vintage wallpaper in the mudroom photo. I layered it with a distressed charger for a touch of charm and added black candelabras for height and drama. To bring in texture, I used linen napkins tied with velvet ribbon and ribbed stemware that catches the candlelight beautifully. For a playful and Chanukah-inspired twist, I paired toile paper plates with a DIY menorah setup and scattered a few dreidels down the center.

Planning the space
A beautiful table also needs breathing room. I always make sure each guest has enough space. About two feet per person feels comfortable.
It’s tempting to keep adding things, but sometimes simplicity has more charm. When I’m unsure, I step back and take a photo. If it feels inviting and balanced, interesting yet not overwhelming , then I know it’s just right.
In the end, each tablescape is the journey of turning inspiration into something tangible. It’s about seeing beauty in an image or a moment and reimagining it as a shared experience around the table.
